Land Ownership

The Land Ownership layer enables you to find out information about land ownership across the UK. LandExplorer combines INSPIRE property boundaries with Companies House data on UK and foreign companies that own land in the UK. You can find more about how LandExplorer identifies land ownership here.

When you first toggle the Land Ownership layer on you will likely see a message asking you to zoom in. This dataset is huge, so to ensure the app functions well we restrict the land ownership search to relatively small regions at a time. Once you zoom in enough the message will disappear and you will see a transparent layer over the base layer. You can then click to find information about the boundary and ownership of the land.

After you click the Land Information panel will open on the left side. A single click may result in no properties appearing in the Land Information list, or one or more properties appearing. If no properties appear this is likely because the land is unregistered with the Land Registry.

Often there will be very limited public information available for a specific property. This is because only ownership information for properties owned by UK and overseas companies are made available as public information. Ownership information for privately owned properties is not made public free of charge. You can find out this information by taking the INSPIRE ID and searching the Land Registry. A small fee of approximately £3 is payable to download the title information.

If more than one property appears, that is likely because there are multiple titles associated with that land. By default the freehold title will open, as in the first image above.

By clicking the arrow next to the property ID in the Land Information panel you can view the information for the other titles. In the example below there are a number of leasehold titles as well. By scrolling down you can access additional options.

The 'Check for Other Properties' button will search the database to find other properties that are owned by the same proprietor.

After clicking a new Ownership Search panel will be displayed to help navigate the ownership search functionality. If this proprietor owns other properties a list of other properties owned by this proprietor will be displayed. You can then use the arrow button to go to that property. You can click on the properties to select them. After selecting a property you can zoom out to view a map with all of this proprietors properties highlighted.
